BE#28 : A Reflection (Mar 30)

Salut!!

I have been studying English for the longest time. Truthfully, I've realized that I've been studying it longer than I have of Filipino, my mother tongue. Isn't it a bit ironic? I feel that I've been a traitor all my life. Hahaha :) Kidding. Even though this is the case, I think that English is one of the most if not the most progressive language in the world. It is and will forever evolve as time passes by. Because of this, I think that there is a need to update my knowledge with regards to the language. Fortunately, DLSU offers courses that will help improve and update my knowledge in English. This term, I have an English class. It's called ENGLCOM.

Before the course even started, I think one of my weaknesses when it comes to writing is that I don't proof-read. Because of that, I usually have a lot of errors when it comes to my essays. ENGLCOM has helped me become meticulous when it comes to writing essays and I think that will benefit me not only now for my grades but also in the future. Another flaw of mine before was that I disregard some details of the things I read and so after reading, I often do not understand anything. This course has helped me analyze and remember the details more. It has taught me the value of knowing the details of something. These are just some of the things I have learned in ENGLCOM.

To be honest, I didn't really expect anything before this course started and now that this course is about to end, all I can say is that I'm really thankful not only to DLSU but also to my teachers who has helped me be a better person. :)

That's it for now!

Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#27: An Inside View On Politics (Mar 28)

Salut!!

You can find the links of the articles below! :)

“Politics is a fact. Politics is activity in relation to power. Politics is a domain of its own -- the domain of power. Thus it is not morality, it is not aesthetics, nor is it economics. Politics is a way of thinking, just as these others are. “---Francis Parker Yockey

Power is a measurement of the capacity of an entity to exercise power and control over an environment and the behavior of other entities as well.

In the first article, it is evident how power was exercised through the signing of the extension of EPIRA (Electric Power Industry Reform Act) law and the two other bills which allows the employment of night workers and the mandatory basic immunization for infants and children.

The decision made by the president, President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, clearly affected the nation with regards to health, work and way of life. These decisions actually have a big impact on the society. Just imagine what will happen to the night workers if the bill regarding the employment of night workers was not approved. It is known that not all people have the means to study.

Many students attend school at daytime then have evening or most commonly referred to as “graveyard shifts” after. Given these circumstances, the president can actually control the people on how they earn and work. Education can also be sacrificed if this was not approved.

People work mainly for their basic needs such as food, clothing, water and shelter. All of us know that education will have a great impact on how and what our future will be. But despite knowing all of this, more and more people each day decides to give up their education in order to work to earn money to survive.

We might not see the relation of these things at first but the way we live our lives are very much affected by the decisions of the people who have authority over us.

The intentions of the people with power over us are not really explained thoroughly. We will never know why they have decided to take us as their ”responsibility”. In my opinion, some do it for their personal interest especially when the matters involve money because as we all know, it is still considered legal if they coat the total cost of a certain project with an additional of up to 10%. On the other hand, like what most of them claim, it is because they want to serve all of us here and because of their love for our country and its people.

Despite all these vague reasons of their decisions coming up, it is still considered as legitimate not only because we trust them not to abuse us in a way that it will be harder for us to live but also because we know within ourselves the drastic change these decisions may contribute to a better society for us.

It is said that the basic immunization for infants and children is now mandatory. Yes, not all people have the capacity to have their children vaccinated but I can say that this signed bill is not for the people in authority because we all know that they really have the means to have these vaccine shots for their children. This bill is for the well-being of the people.

As simple as the signing of this bill, this may help build a better nation for all of us. One of the reasons is that we will be a part of a physically healthier society. Second, this will indirectly create stronger bonds between the people with authority which caters to a psychologically healthier society. Lastly, it will be a big impact on the way we view life. We will have a more optimistic view on life.

My second article tackles President Obama’s declare of their continuous support for the Afghan war.

This article is quite controversial because this is their country’s longest war. Day by day, more and more people disapprove of the war but this has subsided a bit after bin Laden’s death.

It might be a bit hard for President Obama to find more and more ways to convince people under him to support or at least not oppose the support for this war. Not only does President Obama want to convince the people, he also wants their efforts to not be put into waste which can be the case if they stop their support for the war.

Not all people see this as a legitimate decision mainly because they feel that they have nothing to do with this war and that they are being fined or that their money is somewhat used for things that they do not consider as important.

I think this is a perfect example on how power is exercised greatly. When you analyze it, many people are starting to oppose this but as the head, he has the power to do what he thinks is right not only for him but also for his people. Though not all of them may understand his reasoning, he tries his best to serve well and to put into good use the power he has and make his decisions as clear as possible for the people to understand.

Trust is very much important in our society today especially when we tackle about politicians, authority and legitimacy. Not all the decisions of the politicians are considered as legitimate by the people maybe because they do not state their objectives clearly enough for the people to understand or sometimes because people do not see their effort to make decisions according to the collective well-being of the society.

“Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it.” – William Pitt the Elder

Misusing government power for personal purposes such as bribery, police brutality, extortion and even corruption are just some of the few acts which are considered as illegal acts and should be properly and justly dealt with.

Generally, Politics is a way of reconciling differences. It is a basic form of communicating for the betterment of the society. It is a way of making collective decisions in relation to the state. It consists of social ties that involve authority, power, legitimacy, and many more.

BE#26: Wednesday Classes: To Love or To Hate? (Mar 27)

Salut!!

Now, I am in my ENGLCOM class. I must admit that I am a bit bored since I have already submitted my argumentative essay outline and draft and as of now I am still waiting for my teacher’s comments. Unfortunately, something is wrong (again) with La Salle’s wi-fi so I have nothing left to do aside from thinking about all the requirements that have to be submitted next week. Yes, next week. EVERY SINGLE THING NEXT WEEK.

Every Wednesday, I am just supposed to stay home and work on my requirements because it is my free day. For the past weeks, a professor of mine likes scheduling classes on Wednesdays. The idea of having Wednesday classes suck but when that day actually comes, I don’t know how but I end up enjoying it. I must admit.. I learn a lot from that class. It feels good.

With all the requirements due next week, I honestly don’t know how I will be able to enjoy my Wednesday class tomorrow.

That’s it for now!
Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#25: Taking A Step Backward (Mar 26)

Salut!!

We were required to watch a dance show for my PE class. Here’s what I think.

Dancing is a part of everyone in some way. It is a part of me. I may not be good at it but I have always been a fan of great dancers no matter what type of dance it may be. So for me, watching this dance series is not a requirement but hence, an entertaining show I wouldn’t dare to miss.

I cannot think of anything negative to say about this performance. It was educational, amazing, fantastic, and most importantly, entertaining. The dancers blew the whole audience away. Not literally, of course. They were outstanding. They made every moment worth watching. They were incredible.

Before and after every segment, there were speakers lecturing us about the benefits of dancing and the different types of dances. But there was one type of dance that made the whole audience open their mouths while dancing. I believe that this dance also received the loudest applause compared to all those dances. It was the “Salidsid” or most commonly referred to as “Banga”.

The Salidsid/Banga dance was amazing beyond compare. Every single second of their dance, I was biting my nails because it was intense. I was so hooked to what they were doing I actually didn’t want to blink so that I could see every single thing that they did. The second part that caught my eye was the Tinikling. Not only did they perform flawlessly, they also interacted with the audience by asking for volunteers to do the Tinikling themselves. For me, audience interaction and connection is very important in all types or kinds of performances.

I personally believe that the success of a show can be measured by how the audience would react after the performances. And for this show, I believe that the show was outstanding and it was indeed a success.
That’s it for now!
Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#24: Hunger Games (Mar 22)

Salut!!

     Today, I had a blast!

During Thursdays, I usually head straight home after my classes. This day was an exception. Today is the first day of the screening of Hunger Games! I have waited for like forever for this! Hahaha  So this is how my day went.

My mom fetched me at around 5 p.m. in Mc Donalds, Taft. We went straight to Glorietta afterwards in Makati. As soon as we got there, my sister and I bought tickets because we knew that it will be hard to find nice seats at a later time. When we checked the seats, all the time slots were if not full, almost full at least! Because of this, we got the 10 p.m. movie slot! I know it’s a bit late since I have classes every Friday but I just can’t miss this one!

My mom, my sister and I ate and shopped while we waited for the movie to start. At around 9:40, we decided to buy our snacks and drinks and then we went inside the movie house. The movie house was full packed!! Students, parents and even employees aged around 30 were there! I felt everyone’s excitement.

Beyond the beautiful faces of the actors and actresses and beyond the wonderful story of the movie, I felt that there was something more to it. I think the main message of the movie was just right there but not everyone saw it. I am not sure if that was the real message of the movie but for me, it was the masked situation of the people. They were controlled like crazy by the government! I don’t even think freewill existed there. They were like puppets that have no control of themselves. It saddens me because I somehow see their situation here in the Philippines.

Anyway, as soon as the movie was done, we went straight home. We got home at around 1 a.m. And now, it’s almost 2 a.m. so I have to sleep cause I still have to wake up early tomorrow.

That’s it for now! Goodnight!
Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#23: Life As I View It (Mar 21)

Salut!!

I have always loved going on outreaches back when I was still in high school. It has always made me feel something unexplainable in my heart but that surely was very worth my time.

For my NSTP, I chose CWTS mainly because I would want to share what I have with others. DLSU has given me this wonderful opportunity of continuing what I love to do.

My CWTS class was assigned in 1K1 Kasiglahan Village in Rodriguez, Rizal. We were divided into two groups: Tutorial and Waste Management / Ukay-ukay. I was part of the tutorial team. I, together with my two classmates, was assigned to Grade 6 students.

When we first arrived for our very first tutorial day, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed since only a few of my expected students came. As the weeks passed, I grew attached to them. Every week, I look forward to the knowledge I can share with them. As a child, I was used to having boys as my playmates so I think that was also a factor on why I was deeply attached to my Grade 6 tutees there.

I think it was around the 5th week after I finished teaching them Mathematics and made them answer exercises, one of my students told me that they feel good when they learn and that they learned the most from us. I felt like I was about to reach nirvana when I heard it! Haha. Kidding aside, after he told me that, he actually asked me to give them assignments because they feel good when they study and so I did.

That experience is surely just one of the many things I’ve learned from NSTP. The feeling is just priceless. I will not hesitate on doing such again if given a chance and if I have time.

That’s it for now!
Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#22: Sinulog Festival (Mar 17)

Salut!!

Fiesta, is a Spanish word that means "party", "feast" or "festival". The Philippines is known for having a lot of festivals. One of which is the Sinulog Festival.

The Sinulog Festival is one of the grandest and most talked about festivals in the Philippines. This major festival is celebrated every year on the 3rd Sunday of January in Cebu City, Philippines to honor the Santo Niño, the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu. In Catholic faith, Jesus is not a saint but a God. While dancing, people are shouting petitions and thanksgiving. They believe that it is necessary to shout so that they are assured that they will be heard by Santo Niño. The dance moves to the sound of the drums and this resembles the current Sinulog of what was then known as Cebu’s Pahina River. Thus, in Cebuano, they say it’s Sinulog. It is basically a dance ritual which links and remembers the Filipino’s recognition of Christianity.

The celebration traditionally lasts for nine days. On the 8th day, the Fluvial Procession, a water parade, held at dawn from the Mandaue City wharf to Cebu City wharf with the Santo Niño carried on a pump boat decorated with hundreds of flowers and candles. A re-enactment of the Christianizing of Cebu at the Basilica follows after the end of the procession. The 9th day ends with the Sinulog Grand Parade. A Pontifical Mass is held at the Basilica on the feast day by the Cardinal with the assistance of several bishops of Cebu.

Before, the father of Sinulog, David “Boy” Odialo, organized the first “Sinulog sa Sugbu” which is now Cebu’s biggest festival. He actually didn’t really expect that the festival would get as big as it is today and much bigger in the future.

When the Sinulog sa Cebu debuted in 1980, he first gathered elderly Sinulog dancers and drummers in Cebu City to learn from them. Odilao said he himself tried the basic Sinulog footwork of two steps forward and one step backward, to get a feel of the dance. The first festival on Jan. 20, 1980 used recycled costumes from an earlier festival. The festival was conceptualized as a youth program to promote the culture and religion of Cebu.

Today, the devotion of people to Santo Niño has grown and has really made an impact to the Philippine’s popularity. Every year, this festival is becoming more and more grand. More tourists and more visitors go to the Philippines to celebrate this magnificent event. Even journalists say that this festival keeps on moving forward and never will it move backwards.

The festival this year was opened last January 6 with the Sinulog 2011 Opening Salvo: Walk of Jesus and ended on January 21 with the “Hubo”--- a ritual wherein they undress the Santo Niño image in Basilica del Santo Niño.

I think a lot has changed with regards to its duration because like in the recent Sinulog Festival, they hosted more contests because more people participated. Every year, it is being advertised through oral advertising so more and more people would want to see this celebration. As time passes, the people who organized the festival learn from their experience and thus, leads to the improvement of the Sinulog Festival.

Compared to before, the Sinulog Festival today is more colorful, more interesting and even more sought after.

The Sinulog Festival continues to progress also because of tourists and bloggers. When looking for a place to visit, tourists usually check the internet for places to visit and this is where the bloggers come in.

According to the official website of the Sinulog Festival, the festival began as a revival of an old dance that brought government, business establishments, schools, pilgrims, artists and private individuals together like never before. The attempt to enhance cultural awareness gave the Cebuanos a shared passion, a collective identity. In the end the Sinulog did give Cebu a culure. And a name. Pit Senyor!

When the time comes, I would want to go to Cebu and celebrate the Sinulog Festival with all of them! I feel that it will be so much fun!

That's all for now!

BE#21: Social Choice (Mar 13)

A brief background of what I’ve been reading..

Social Choice

The social choice theory is a process or abstractive framework used to add up and measure individualistic curiosity, attraction, beliefs or satisfaction as a cumulative towards collective decision for the society. It is largely about whether voting mechanisms, or more abstract mechanisms, can improve upon the results of the market and social preferences and how they might be found. Moreover, it is also to understand the government’s decisions with regards to society’s preferences. Social choice theory infuses the elements of welfare economics, a branch of economics that focuses on the optimal allocation of resources and goods and how it affects social welfare, and voting theory.

BE#20: Waste Glass = Cleaner Water (Mar 12)

Salut!!

A brief summary of what I’ve been reading lately…

Ground Glass Solution for Cleaner Water

Waste glass has been around us ever since we were born and only a part of these can be recycled and be put into good use. Nichola Coleman from the University of Greenwich in London has managed to develop a simple method of converting waste container glass into the mineral tobermorite. Tobermorite is the main material that can be extracted from glass. It can be used as a filter and absorb toxic lead, cadmium and other toxic metals in water. With the help of this new discovery, a great fraction of waste glass can and will be put to good use and this can also help us take care of mother nature better.

BE#19: Summer Time (Mar 8)

Salut!!

Since I was a child, summer time has always been the best season for me. During those times, my only problem was where I will spend my summer break. Now that I am a college student, I want to be more objective in picking the place where I’ll spend my summer vacation since we only have one month. If I will be given a chance to go back to a place I’ve already been to, I will weigh my options very well. Summer season is a hot season so I prefer to engage in water sports or sightseeing in cold places. After the process of elimination, I ended up with Boracay and Bicol. Now the question is, “Which is better?”.

Boracay is known for its white sand beach and the activities you can do there. Some examples of which are helmet diving, banana boat, zorb, and of course swimming. Bicol is known for having a lot of tourist destinations like the Mayon Volcano. Hiking, going to the falls, zip lining, nature tripping, and swimming are just some of the examples of the activities you can do in Bicol.

One of the most important things you should consider before going somewhere is its ambiance. How you feel when you’re in a certain place is very important since your mood and trip will be very much affected by this. When I went to Boracay, It feels so light there and relaxing while in Bicol I felt very refreshed and I felt that all my stresses were gone in an instant.

I am a people-person. I love to interact with people. Thus, the crowd in the places I go to is another component. When I went to Boracay during the Holy Week last year, I noticed that there were many foreigners. Not that I don’t like foreigners but I think they are sort of cautious when it comes to interacting with Filipinos. In Bicol, maybe because they have been exposed to the same crowd over and over again, they have been used to interacting with the people around them thus making them very comfortable, friendly, and hospitable to everyone.

Given these circumstances, I would prefer going to Bicol again rather than Boracay. I feel that Bicol is better because of its environment. Even though it is not yet that civilized like Boracay, I think that was the very thing that captured me the most. Eco-friendly and green? That’s Bicol.

That's all for now!

BE#18: My Sanctuary (Mar 6)

Salut!!

My bedroom is undoubtedly the best place in the world for me. I am sitting on the floor now inside my favorite bedroom on a cozy Saturday evening. The yellow dim lights, pink-colored door, violet-painted walls, and the pearl white ceiling never fail to de-stress my eyes. The color blocking is so perfect that it refreshes me in an instant. Along with this is the vanilla scent that will surely leave a soothing sensation in one's body. When I am here, I feel so secure that it feels like I don't need anything else. I can stand days without leaving this place. My room reflects me as myself and not as somebody else. I love my bedroom. It is definitely the best. It is my safe haven.

That's all for now!

BE#17: Tagalog Kung Tagalog (Mar 1)

Salut!!

This is a very very tagalog-filled essay so brace yourselves!! I wrote this for a class and I really want to share it because I think it is really very fitting and it really is happening to the world now.

BE#16: Honesty in Business (Feb 29)

Salut!!

I know, i know. I'm such a weirdo when it comes to blogging. Hahaha :)) This one is another random post!

Honesty in the business world. As cliché as it may sound, trust is like a glass that when it breaks, no matter how hard you try and how much effort you put into it, it will never regain its original form ever again. This is applicable in the world of business. Once in a blue moon is the maximum probability in which you will ever hear of two companies or business partners who have had a problem before when it comes to honesty and trust reunite and become partners again. Like what they say, “Business is business”. Some people may be friends outside of their workspace but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are going to allow special treatment when it comes to their business. For me, honesty is the most important element that should be considered especially when it comes to this field.

BE#15: Born From A Boombox (Feb 27)

Salut!!

I personally made this article for one of my classes. This is what I’ve realized (

BFAB. BFAB stands for born from a boombox. Every person has his own beat, his own tune, and his own melody. It is not necessary for everyone to understand your music but you'll find people who will. You'll call them your friends.

Friendly is the most common adjective you'll get as an answer when you ask people about the traits of a DLSU-M freshman La Sallian. La Sallians are known to be really friendly. Along with this compliment, they, according to the people around them, are also known to be hard party goers but is this really the case? A survey was conducted to verify the stereotype of DLSU-M freshmen La Sallians.

45 freshmen La Sallians were surveyed. Each student was asked about the number of times they visit a mall, a pub, or a club per week. The results are as follows:

69% of the students surveyed said that they go out on weekdays. Out of those students, 65% said that they only go out once per week. It only goes to show that even though most of them said that they go out even on weekdays, it is evident that they are they are really focused on other things rather than their social life.

The survey proves that DLSU-M freshmen students actually spend most of their time in school more than anywhere else. The common stereotype for them is that they are hard party goers but with the help of the survey conducted, that assumption was proved to be inapplicable to them. In addition to this, 100% of the respondents agreed that their academic life is very important for them.

Other than a survey, an impromptu interview was also conducted.

47% said that they are not active with regards to co-curricular activities. This is so because they prioritize their academics, they have no time, and that they have other priorities.

The 53% left believes that participating and being active in co-curriculars will be advantageous to them not only in the future but also in their academics.

Aside from learning from seminars and talks, they also earn incentives when they participate in the projects of their mother organization or most especially when they go to events for a cause. An example of which is a fund raising activity recently held by an organization inside DLSU-M.

Freshmen La Sallians sure do know how to live life to the fullest. They like parties and enjoy having a good time but even though they do, they know when to. They know their priorities and when to prioritize what first. They have proven that we can benefit from something we enjoy doing.

Studies on the other hand still remains their top priority since they know it will have a longer effect on them which eventually will help them in their futures.

That's all for now!

Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#14: Ethics in Business (Feb 23)

Salut!!

Ethics. What is it? It is a complex of moral conduct dealing with values with regards to how we classify and see the degree of human actions, motives, and ends of such actions whether it is right and/or wrong. May it be at home, in school, in the office or basically everywhere, there will always be a code of ethics. It is applicable to everyone and no one is exempted from this even students, teachers, parents, construction workers, accountants, and etc. But what is ethics really for and why do we need to observe it? Let us track it down by using the field of Accounting as an example.

In accounting, ethics is associated with the standards that they, as professionals, need to follow during their practice. To become a benchmark in their field, strictly following their standards is a must. In the real world, intelligence and ability is not everything. The people you work with, especially your business partners, will also rely on your professional integrity. Because of this, they have modified their own code of ethics with regards to their profession to suit their professional competency which aims for them to develop a high degree of discipline.

The main role of ethics in accounting is for the accountants to adhere to certain rules for them to be able to conduct accounting in a fair way. One of the biggest questions that the profession has is whether ethics can be taught or not. They believe that it can be taught since nobody was born with an inbuilt ethics in their mind and soul. The people around a person will be responsible for inculcating ethics in them as time passes.

Ethical behavior should always be observed in Accounting. People under this field are mainly tasked to serve the public interest. It is and will never be right to take advantage of the masses even though they don’t know as much as the professionals in this field do. As a public servant, they are expected to behave in such a way that will benefit not only them but also everyone around them.

That's all for now!

BE#13: Reality Check (Feb 20)

Salut!!

As of February 2011, there are 195 official countries in the world. One of which is The Republic of the Philippines which is comprised of 7,107 islands is located in Southeast Asia. And like any other country, the Philippines also experience some problems in their country.

One of the problems in the Philippines is the lack of quality education or even worse, education itself.

Education and academic quality can mean different things to different people, depending on their role in the society.

Lack of education, most often than not, leads to unemployment. Compared to someone who has a good academic background, companies will surely disregard people who apply without proper education.

People work in order to provide their basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. It is not unbeknownst to us that education has a really big role on our future. For most of us, it is the factor that decides our fate. Because of this, I find education as equally as important as food and shelter. Food is considered necessary for our health while education is food for our brain/mind.

Working hard for your education somehow means that you’ll make more money for yourself. Aside from learning a lot, it is also scientifically proven to make you live longer, and live a happier life and studies also show that it increases the number of interesting people you will meet.

A passive attitude or procrastinating can be a factor of not having quality education. You may be in a prestigious school but if you don’t listen, what is the use of going to school? Nothing.

The Philippines is over populated. As of 2010, the Philippines ranked 12th as the most populous country in the world. It doesn’t really seem that much of a problem upon hearing this but if this problem is not handled correctly; it may actually be the biggest problem our country will ever face.

Overpopulation is like a thief with a mask. You know it’s a thief but you’re never sure who it is. This problem needs to be taken seriously because our natural resources are limited. No matter what we do, it will someday not be enough for all of us. There is no such thing as unlimited in this world.

In our world today, people often take a lot of things for granted. They don’t really analyze the long-term consequences of our actions and they just do what they want to do. Doing things before thinking is if not the worst, it is one of the least peculiarities that you would want to have.

Aside from the factors that we have no control of like decline in the death rate and migration, lack of control, lack of education and lack of guidance are also some of the causes of overpopulation.

Lack of control simply because of the alarming reality that financially unstable families are actually bigger in number that the families that belong to the middle and upper class.

Lack of education with regards to family planning is a big factor too because up to now, it is a fact that many people especially the ones living in rural areas are not aware on how to use contraceptives.

“Kapag mas marami, mas masaya!” – This is one of the most common lines you will hear whenever Filipinos have gatherings. A typical Filipino is naturally friendly. They have this thing in them that wants company. This makes them conclude that the bigger your family is, the happier you will be. One more thing is that they believe that if they have more children, more luck and more blessings come their way. They also think that more children is equal to more work force and because of this, they think that they have more chances of having a better life.

Our environmental problems are also one of the worst problems in the Philippines. Pollution is a good example of this.

According to the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), only about 10% of sewage in the Philippines is treated or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. The rest goes back to nature – usually the sea.

Given this observation, poor waste treatment, laziness of people to dispose their garbage properly and underestimating the blow of population is the cause of water pollution.

Water pollution can kill life that inhabits water-based ecosystems such as fishes, dolphins, birds, and many other animals. Water pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well. The chemicals, when eaten by animals, may poison them and if this goes on, a part of the food chain may actually vanish and stop the food chain.

The Ideology that would best address and solve the problems I’ve mentioned namely: lack of quality education, overpopulation and environmental problems is liberalism.

All the problems that I have mentioned are actually connected with each other. The lack of education can cause unemployment which may eventually lead to poverty. An environmental problem such as pollution has a lot of bad effects to our health. Pollution may also be a cause of the diminishing natural resources that we have. And if there comes a time wherein these resources are not sufficient anymore, poverty comes in. Another cause of poverty is overpopulation.

This ideology believes that freedom is important in all areas of life. We should have the right to decide for our own but along with this freedom, we should also have access to opportunities like all the others.

I feel that it is just right that the government will still be guiding the citizens to maintain order but they should be cautious not to go beyond their role. It will also be better if they will have a definite line between the right and the wrong not only to avoid chaos but because it is the right thing to do and it will also be the best for everyone.

Having equal opportunities most especially when it comes to quality education may help the Filipinos live a better life.

BE#12: Imagine (Feb 15)

Salut!!

Imagine is the title of the world renowned song popularized by John Lennon. It is the perfect song to describe how we should view life. It also sends us a message that we should always hope for a better tomorrow and that we should do our best to unite and love one another. One way of showing it is by serving or helping our younger brothers and sisters who are in need.

A 3-hour medical and dental mission is conducted every Sunday from 9am to 12nn in a clinic inside the vicinity of the church in my village (Multinational Village). Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary is the name of our church and they call the clinic there “Avignone Clinic”.

The clinic is named after the place where Father Hannibal Mary Di Francia began his mission of serving the poor. He saw hope for the desolate and the faith that must be restored. This clinic is therefore dedicated to the noble work that Father Hannibal had begun.

I decided to be a volunteer in this mission because I live in the same village as them so I want to know how I can be of help to my neighbors. I want to be a part of their journey to a better life. I want to know more about the present condition of the people who live near me and I think this medical mission is a great tool for me to achieve this goal of mine.

Together with all the volunteers who really devote their time into helping the indigenous people, our medical mission was a success! It is indeed a very fulfilling mission and I really felt so happy that this is an understatement.

Participating in a program like this made me realize a lot of things about life. How lucky I am compared to them not only financially but also with regards to health. The volunteers who devoted their time and effort in helping in this mission made me realize that there is really something special about the experience of being able to help others without expecting anything in return.

I learned a lot of things in a short period of time and like Ate Luanne at first, I thought that this mission might be actually a bit boring but after this experience I might actually volunteer again next time because it really does feel good to be able to help and serve those who are in need. This experience made me understand the people around me a little more and I hope another chance like this happens again. Hearing thank you’s from people like them has never felt this good.

That's all for now!

Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#11: Futsal (Feb 8)

Salut!!

This brief summary of what I’ve been reading lately..

FUTSAL

Futsal began in the South American countries of Uruguay and Brazil where, in the 1930’s, two versions of Small Sided Soccer were being played in the cities of Montevideo and Sao Paulo respectively. In Brazil, the large crowded cities and a shortage of playing pitches forced a soccer mad populace to play small sided soccer. A version began to develop on the streets of Sao Paulo, leading to the publishing of the first rules of the game in 1936 from the country that would soon become the masters of the game. Skills and techniques honed in Futsal soon began to become apparent in the performance of Brazil’s National Team - Pele, Rivelino, and Zico all played the game at some time in their development.

The adoption of the game by FIFA has led to its spread throughout the world. There are large numbers of registered players in Europe, South America and Asia. In Japan for example they have 300,000 registered players. There are more than 50 national leagues and even Professional Futsal leagues in Brazil, Iran, Japan, Italy, Portugal, Spain & Russia. Futsal gets terrestrial TV coverage in Spain, Italy, Brazil, Croatia, Romania, Ukraine and Russia. In the United States, Futsal is beginning to gain in popularity at the grassroots level and participation numbers continue increase.

I don't actually know what got into me. I just wanted to research about this :)

That's all for now!

BE#10: Fat or Fit (Feb 8)

Salut!!

Living an active life is the key to a healthy you.  But like the majority of the world’s population, they go for the inactive life.

A health crisis is transpiring right before our eyes but we know little about it. We take it as “normal”. People say that when you’re chubby/fat/obese, it is because you’re healthy. They are wrong. The cases of obesity today have taken 66% of adult’s lives in great danger. It may increase their chances of having diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, breathing difficulty, cancer, and many more. Yes, they’re not aware of this.

Obesity is a term used to describe body weight that is significantly greater than what is healthy. It can be caused by indulging on too much food than your body can use, drinking too much alcohol or plainly by just not getting enough exercise. Doctors and other health conscious people have been alarmed by the increasing number of obese people today.

There are actually a lot of ways to counter obesity. Most people think that dieting is enough but not in any way can they surpass the countless benefits of exercising and the cutting down of unhealthy food. As a part of the society, I believe that it is just right that we help the others overcome these kinds of problems by educating them with the health risks of not having an active life.

As for me, I will start living a very much active life. I am not obese but I want to live healthily so that I can enjoy life more and inspire others to live like me too. Always remember that being fat is NOT healthy. FIT is.

That's all for now!

Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,

BE#9: Designer Babies (Feb 7)

Salut!!

Infertility is one of the most common causes on why some women can’t have a baby. IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is a process by which egg cells are fertilized by sperm cells outside the body.

IVF is a treatment done to help couples who cannot produce babies. Along with the IVF treatment, there also have been cases wherein they do gene selection present in the embryo. They say that they select the healthy embryo so that healthy babies will be produced but is this really the right thing to do? I am a Catholic and my faith in God is strong especially when it comes to these things. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that God has his reasons.

They say that “modifying” the embryo will help save lives and that it will produce healthier babies. Is that really the case?

According to what I have researched, it can cause metabolic problems for the mother. Increasing the chances of stillbirths is also an effect of this. It also increases the cancer cells of the baby that may be active through time. Aside from this treatment being very expensive, the results are not guaranteed. There is a higher risk of miscarriage, increased risk of very low birth rate and an even higher risk of pre-eclampsia. Head of reproductive medicine in London, Dr. Geeta Nargund, even warned about the consequences for a woman’s reproductive organs later in life.

For me, risking the lives of not only the embryo’s which is considered as a human being already but most importantly the mother is just not right. When it doesn’t turn out to be a success, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone for the diseases.

Life is a gift from God and I don’t see any reason to question that. In the first place, being given a gift as precious as life is really a thing everyone should be thankful for.
Being picky on what embryo to implant on a woman is also considered as an abortion. Since it is considered living already, not using or implanting it means that it is not being given the same chance as the “healthy” ones to be planted and to live continuously. What do they do to the embryo’s that will not be planted? Nothing. I call it abortion.

To wrap this all up, all I can say is that I don’t approve of this gene selection. For me, it is like playing God and that it is a way of designing babies. What is worse is that it is also a form of abortion that is clearly not acceptable for me and for my religion. It shows how ungrateful humans can be. It risks not only one life, but two. Studies with regards to this should not be continued and so as the treatment. Adoption is a much more suitable option for couples who could not have babies through a normal process.

BE#8: Royal Elizabeth Resort Laguna (Feb 4 & 5)

Salut!!

So the day before yesterday, feb. 4, we went to Royal Elizabeth Resort in Calamba, Laguna. We were personally invited to go there by the owners of the resort which happens to be a close friend of my aunt. :)

Ate Sheville, me, and my sister Ate Camille while on our way.

We met up in our aunt's house before heading to Laguna.

McDonalds in SLEX where we met up some of our relatives.
This is the facade of the place.
After almost an hour, we arrived at Royal Elizabeth Resort!!

This is the right-most part of it where you can see the mini house which has a billiard table !!

This is the walk way going to the kitchen and the pool.

Before anything else, we first settled in and got all our stuff from the cars and placed them
inside our respective rooms. Our room was downstairs because the "oldies" expected
that we are the ones who will sleep the last. My roommates were my cousins! :)

This is the view of the pool and the modern-day nipa huts!!

Me, Amara, Ate Camille
Another reason on why we came here is that Amara and her mom which happens to be
my cousin will soon go back to Australia because they originally live there.

After taking some pictures of the place and settling in, we decided to have an early dinner!! There were so many varieties of food and every single thing looked so yummy that you really have to try everything! My favorite was the California Maki roll! :)

After eating, my cousins and I decided to go up the mini house and play billiards while we were chatting and just enjoying ourselves.

When we were already bored of playing billiards, we swam.

Laguna is known for having hot spring resorts and this surely didn't disappoint! The water was just
                      A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

This is Carla, my cousin. We have been schoolmates since Prep until High school but because we have different interests, we decided to go into different colleges because of our course choices. Because of that, we haven't seen each other for the longest time and we really took advantage of this outing to catch up with each other! :)
So as you can see, after swimming, we decided to play billiards again. We did nothing but bond that day! It was so fun!!

From left to right:
Beej, cousin, graduate-UPD
Sheville with her daughter, Amara, Australian Citizens
Me---:)
Jem, cousin, Frosh-ADMU

After that, we went downstairs, had a few drinks, and used the karaoke machine until the sun was up! :)

From left to right:
Beej (cousin), Me, Jeniza (new friend),
Issa (Jeniza's friend), Jem (cousin),
Cams (sister), Cais (daughter of the
owner of the resort), Sheville (cousin)

Among us who stayed up till the sun was up, I was the first to wake up. I don't know why
but I just did. :)) My aunt was the one who insisted on taking my picture as soon as I went out
of our room.

The first thing I noticed as soon as I got out from our room was Amara. She was swimming!! :)

I ate after taking this picture.

When they were done having their breakfast, we went to the modern-looking nipa huts and drank a little and we talked about what we did before sleeping. Some don't even remember how they reached the room. It was epic!

We swam afterwards and played water Frisbee.
Before leaving, we took a lot of pictures. My relatives are naturally vain.

When we were on our way home, we passed my McDonalds to have our dinner there.

Over all, it was really a fun experience and it was all worth our time.

That's all for now!

Merci beaucoup, Au revoir,
